Navigating proxy access shouldn’t feel like a maze, but for many families, it does. From teens aging into their own medical decisions to elders relying on multiple caregivers, advocates are often the ones troubleshooting broken workflows across different EHR systems. In this session, you’ll learn practical strategies to set up, maintain, and re-establish proxy access; use scripts and checklists that reduce confusion; and apply ethical guardrails when caregivers are involved. Through real-world scenarios, Jean Ross, RN, will equip you with the tools to protect client rights, set clear boundaries, and confidently guide families across complex care transitions. This course has been approved for 1 Ethics CE by the Patient Advocate Certification Board.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain how proxy access actually works across common EHR portals and care settings, and identify typical failure points impacting families.
  • Use plain-language scripts/checklists to guide clients through proxy setup, re-establishment after life events (e.g., turning 14–18), and transitions of care.
  • Set expectations and boundaries in writing (service agreement, scope, termination, documentation standards) when caregivers are involved.
  • Apply ethical/legal considerations (HIPAA basics for non-covered advocates, client rights, ADA accommodations) to real case vignettes.

Thank you for attending our session. Your feedback helps us ensure quality and continuous improvement.
