You’ve done your homework, identified the problem, and know what your client needs, but the physician isn’t listening. Sound familiar?
This practical session explores evidence-based strategies for gaining physician attention, improving communication, and building productive clinical partnerships. You’ll also learn two powerful tools you can use immediately: the Pattern Interrupt for breaking through clinical autopilot and the Escalation Ladder for navigating patient safety concerns when escalation is needed.
Leave with practical techniques, printable resources, and greater confidence in helping your clients be heard. This session has been approved for 1 General CE by the Patient Advocate Certification Board.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Explain the systemic factors that contribute to physician non-listening, including time constraints, electronic health record demands, and algorithm-driven care, and describe how these barriers impact patient advocacy.
- Apply evidence-based communication strategies to improve physician engagement and collaboration, including shared agenda-setting, structured clinical summaries using the SOAP framework, partnership-framing questions, and the Pattern Interrupt technique.
- Demonstrate an appropriate escalation strategy when patient concerns are not adequately addressed by navigating the healthcare chain of command, utilizing assertive communication techniques, and identifying internal and external escalation resources to promote patient safety.
